A week of northerlies had left a big swell running and the waves at
Fraisthorpe were plenty big enough and starting to break a long way out.
Spring low tide meant quite a hike to the water, but at least we were well
away from the concrete blocks. Nicely powered on 4.7, only out of the
straps on one run out. Soon learnt to avoid most of the white water by
bearing away and picking a line and there was clear space between the
waves. However, the waves were starting to break so far out that it was
difficult not to get caught by the crests and stopped. On the outside
things were a little less hectic, but here were some huge waves and the
usual cross chop.
Coming back in the cross chop was a problem as the waves started to jack up
and a smaller board would have been ideal. Further in though, the water was
nice and smooth and backside riding was excellent. The pay off for such a
long battle getting out was really long rides back in.
The high tides had taken their toll on the cliffs and we saw a small
section fall - it went with such a thump - picknicks under the cliffs, even
the low ones, are not a good idea - nor is parking too close.
Only three windsurfers out, plus a few kites further upwind - I guess most
people went out earlier in the week. A superb adrenaline filled session.
